In last message published on his blog before he died in Lebanon, Sergeant Andrei Brudner wrote: 'Many return with blood on their hands (and now they are celebrity because Ynet wrote about them). Wish me luck.' Yoav Freidman


Sergeant Andrei Brudner was killed in Lebanon on Thursday. In his last message on a blog he runs on the Tapuz We site he wrote: "Today I will be there, maybe you will read about me in the news. It will last some days, it may drag on more, but we have ammunitions that can last long. Many return with blood on their hands. (And now they are celebrities because Ynet wrote about them). Wish me luck."
The message was posted two weeks before he died.
At the moment, simple words like "wish me luck" and "shalom" have tragic and painful meanings.
Brudner wrote the message when he was recruited to fight in Gaza. He was recently transferred to the north where his tank was hit by an anti-tank rocket.
Sergeant Itamar Tsur, 19, of Beer Tuvia, and Sergeant Alon Fintuch, 19, of Kiryat Yam died in the attack.

Brunder's blog focused on matters related to the army. He recalled his training, his friends, and shared with readers his experiences as an 18-year-old soldier.
When fighting broke out in Gaza with the kidnapping of Corporal Gilad Shalit, Brunder wrote: "We just started and someone died. The first they all remember. When more die, they won't be names any more, they will be numbers."

"The noise of fire is replaced by explosions, armored hummers, tractors and D9 bulldozers…Everyone is a suspect, above all a suspect. Then he is an enemy resident. Rubble replaces houses, and soot replaced sunsets. By the way...sunsets are beautiful."

Before being deployed in Gaza, he wrote: "People around are worried (and rightly so!!!), but I am trying not to worry myself. I have to remember who I am facing so as not to live an illusion that everything will be good."
On June 30 he wrote that when he finishes his military service on November 29, 2008, he plans on traveling to Jamaica.

'Life is fun'
His family said he loved to compose Hip Hop music. He started writing a song about the army which he didn't finish. He also wrote a song
called 'Good Living,' which he composed with a friend.

In his blog, Brunder comes across as a lively and life-loving teenager. "What's this shit?" he asked bloggers who wrote depressing comments. "Live is fun, if it is not bad, what shall we complain about? How would we overcome problems? There people who don't know how to enjoy small and simple things in life, like breathing."

Yesterday in Rome, meeting with diplomats from the United Nations, the European Union,

and the governments of several Middle Eastern nations, Secretary of State Condaleezza Rice blocked all attempts to stop the current violence in Lebanon and Israel. "We have to have a

plan that will actually create conditions in which we can have a cease-fire that will be sustainable," she said.

Rice's disingenuous stance of refusing to negotiate a ceasefire because we cannot "return to the status quo ante" and "we need a lasting peace" is nothing but a stalling tactic to give the Israeli Defense Forces more time to "degrade" Lebanon. The Decider, during a joint appearance with the United States' puppet du jour in Iraq, Nouri Al Maliki, also said he's against a cease-fire claiming he wants a more permanent arrangement.

All of the talk about creating a "robust international force" in southern Lebanon to enforce security, the Lebanese government asserting its sovereignty over Hezbollah controlled areas, and the disarming of Lebanon's anti-Israel militias, is hopelessly premature, even

presumptuous, while entire populations in Lebanon and Israel are cowering inside bunkers. There is no way that Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora can assert control over his nation while the IDF rips it apart. The world seems to understand two things the Bush Administration does not: 1). No diplomatic progress can be made so long as the war rages on; and 2). This thing needs to be wrapped up now before it engulfs larger nations in a regional war. The longer the US allows this war to continue to escalate, the greater likelihood of it sparking an even bigger war.

Hezbollah shows no signs of giving in to the maximalist US-Israeli demands. Hezbollah and

Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, whose stature as a folk hero in the Arab world has been cemented by the current war, are not being asked to negotiate, but to surrender. Bush and Rice won't even talk to Syria and Iran. Conventional wisdom states that the US will give Israel another week or two to lay waste to the infrastructure, institutions, and the militia that serve the poorest people in Lebanon, most of whom happen to be Shia, and then some form of a cease-fire will be imposed. But while the skies over Lebanon are abuzz with Israeli airplanes and helicopters, and the rockets continue to fall on Haifa and other Israeli towns and cities, the current conflict has the potential to explode into something much bigger.

On July 18th, when I last wrote about the crisis in Lebanon, there had been 230 Lebanese and 24 Israelis killed, and $1 billion worth of destruction in Lebanon; nine days later, there is now over 433 killed in Lebanon, fifty-one dead in Israel, and $2 billion in damage to Lebanon. The key question for American citizens is this: How many corpses on both sides are we willing to accept for the Bush Administration to obtain its objectives in the Middle East? Blocking an immediate cease-fire and refusing to engage the parties of the current conflict in peace talks is just another neo-con wet dream like pursuing "democracy" in Iraq. As the violence intensifies, Condi should realize, as the rest of the civilized world seems to understand, that this war is different than previous Arab-Israeli conflicts, and it is fraught with danger given the current bloodshed in Iraq and in the Palestinian territories, and the emboldening of Iran in the region. The longer this war goes on with escalations on both sides, the more unstable and out of control the situation becomes.

The American occupation of Iraq has inflamed the Iraqis and destabilized Baghdad, one of the most important cities in the Arab world. The IDF's demolishing of the Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip, which has claimed the lives of over 120 Palestinians in recent weeks, has inflamed the Sunni Arabs in the Palestinian territories and elsewhere. The IDF attacks in Lebanon on the infrastructure and institutions that are tied to Hezbollah have inflamed the Shia of Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran. For the first time, a non-state agent is lobbing hundreds of rockets into Israel's northern cities. As this barrage continues, the IDF is guaranteed to intensify the violence, and will be tempted to dip into its vast arsenal of anti-personnel munitions such "fuel-air weapons," cluster bombs, napalm, and white phosphorous. The world demands a cease-fire now, and our nation's chief diplomat, following the instructions of our illustrious Commander-in-Chief, is blocking the international community's efforts to contain this war

before it spreads.

When Israel and the United States were militarily chewing up the PLO and Saddam Hussein they were at least combating mostly secularists; now they threaten to spark exactly what Samuel Huntington in The Clash of Civilizations warned against: a "fault line war." The current conflict has taken on the coloration of a religious war. To millions of people the conflict looks like Christians and Jews using their superior technology to destroy and oppress Muslims, both Shiite and Sunni.

Right-wing ideologues make poor diplomats. They are blind to the social, cultural, political, and religious nuances of the Middle East, and they are far too dedicated to the use of force. (William Kristol and other nut-bags are openly advocating US military action against Iran.) When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail. Bush and Condi's "transformational diplomacy," and the glorification of war to solve complex human problems, can only lead to more bloodshed, as it has in Iraq.

Jimmy Carter's former National Security Adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, said on July 20th that the United States must engage Syria and Iran. He sees Iran as a "serious threat" but not an "imminent" threat, meaning the United States has time to work out a deal with Iran at a later date. Brzezinski believes "Iran is a serious country, it's not Iraq. It's going to be a player," and therefore must be handled carefully and prudently. If the Bush Administration continues to isolate Iran, he said: "I fear that the region will explode, and for that matter, Israel will be in the long run in great jeopardy." Brzezinski offered the wise suggestion for a regional conference that would include Muslim states that are more distant from the current conflict such as Algeria, Morocco, and Pakistan, to bring them into the process of stabilizing the region. But George W. Bush appears to have something different in mind for the Middle East.

Em letras muito pequenas, como legenda a uma fotografia que me faz lembrar os filmes do Pedro Costa, diz-que o Público “ visitou hospitais psiquiátricos, falou com responsáveis políticos e médicos e verificou que os portugueses estão entre os europeus mais vulneráveis às doenças mentais.”

O Público verificou que somos os mais vulneráveis? Verificou, como? Vendo? Falando? Lendo estatísticas?

Que pena que o Público se esqueça dos internados nesses hospitais. Terá falado com pessoas como aquela mulher que aparece na fotografia? Duvido. Como não há nomes a acompanhar o que vem na primeira página, o Público, que fez estas coisas que anuncia, não tem talvez pessoas para falar com eles.

Os meus olhos são atraídos para uma notícia ao lado, mais pequena

Internados num hotel em vez de num hospital?

Lembranças de New York, rua 101 com a Amesterdam Av, onde havia um ‘hotel’ habitado por doentes mentais, levam-me a fazer a ligação. Mas não é aqui o caso. As dua notícias não têm a ver uma com a outro. Estão só lado a lado. No entnanto, doenças mentais parececem andar na ordem do dia pela Europa.

A ida para o hotel é referida numa notícia, retirada do Guardian, onde se fala de um relatório do Sainsbury’s Center for Mental Health. A crer no que é dito no início, deve ser um relatório muito interessante:

“As pessoas que sofrem de problemas de saúde mental poderiam ter direito a uma
curta estada num hotel em vez de serem internadas num hospital”

Coisa extraordinária. Fico confusa. Deve ser por ser domingo. Tenho que ver se encontro o relatório na Net.

Volto à notícia principal. Fico a saber que há seis hospitais psiquiátricos em Portugal. Para um país tão vulnerável, não me parece muito. Mas é. Estes hospitais não têm “outras valências”. Os doentes estão melhor em Serviços psiquiátricos dos hospitais gerais, diz-se. Não me parece óbvio. A minha experiência do Hospital Júlio de Matos e aquilo que o Prado Coelho anda a contar sobre a sua no Hospital Santa Maria leva-me a imaginar cenas de pesadelo ou de terror, pelos corredores de Santa Maria.
Mas os peritos dizem que é melhor, a senhora Secretária de Estado diz que é melhor, o Lá Fora diz que é melhor e, portanto, é melhor. Quem sou eu?

A Senhora Secretária de Estado fala em depressões, a tal doença que a Evidência diz que vai ser a epidemia dos século XXI. (E eu a pensar que seria a pandemia da gripe aviária...). Afirma que esta doença não é tratada em hospitais psiquiátricos. Mas porque fala ela em depressões quando as estatísticas apresentadas para causas de internamento psiquiátrico não a referem? Retirem-se as consultas para os depressivos. De qualquer maneira, porque vão estes a consultas? Podem fazer um check-in num hotel.

Para esses outros é fundamental a “criação da rede de cuidados continuados” que integra um conjunto de unidades de saúde e instituições do sector privado, social religioso e publico que articularão respostas a dar a idosos e pessoas dependentes, como é o caso de alguns doentes mentais”. Ou então ficam em casa onde lhes será prestada assistência. Os esquizofrénicos? Os psicóticos? Suicidas, retardados/atrasados, violentos, prostados, sedados?

A poupança não é a preocupação da Reforma, tem o cuidado de dizer a Senhora Secretária de Estado. É preciso uma “melhor distribuição de recursos, que são escassos.” RECURSOS. Coisas, pessoas de recurso?

E, finalmente,

O que é que os nossos doentes psiquiátricos têm de especial para que não façamos
reformas que se fizeram noutros países há 20 anos?

Nada, minha Senhora. Os nossos doentes psiquiátricos não têm nada de especial. Aqui, como noutras partes, não são tidos nem achados na sua catalogação, no seu tratamento, nos ditos recursos ... enfim, para aquilo que podem (ou gostariam de) ter/ser.

Os senhores políticos, a Senhora Secretária de Estado já ouviram algum? Isto, mesmo se aceitarmos que os médicos falam com eles e os ouvem.

Já nem passo para outra página do jornal. Já me chega por agora.
É domingo e há domingos que não são mesmo nada fáceis.

Este é o meu primeiro post deste ano de 2006. Suponho que devia ter dito: Bom ano.

O Público de ontem - 9 de Dezembro 2005 - tem alguns títulos interessantes que vale a pena serem analisados como performativos. Performativos são termos ou frases que não descrevem; são actos de fala que criam uma situação, geralmente, com consequências importantes.


O 1º Título tem a ver, claro, com a afirmação de Condi Rice em Bruxelas

EUA não torturam

e BUM! não houve torturas. Esqueçam as fotos, os testemunhos, a proposta de McCain, o Lobby de Cheney, etc, etc. Condi disse, o que o Patrão já dissera e criaram essa situação -- não se sabe onde. Com tal situação os europeus só podiam ficar SATISFEITOS.

O 2º título tem a ver com o Cavaco:

Cavaco Silva diz que Portugal pode ser a "nova Califórnia da Europa"

Esta afirmação não faz aparecer a Califórnia nesta terra. Com esta frase está a criar-se como Arnie, o Exterminator português. Assim se prepara para ir para Presidente. Saberá que o Arnie está já de saída?

O 3º Título refere a esperada pandemia. Não temos tempo para estar à espera. É preciso ir à vida. Por isso, o director do programa de gripe da Organização Mundial de Saúde não tem dúvidas:

"O vírus vai tornar-se global em três a cinco meses."

Há um novo possível vírus pandémico da gripe e não há tempo para fechar os olhos.

Há virus, não há virus? Apareceu! Apareceu e espalhou-se. É global.
Não, esperem. Afinal é um vírus animal.

Está decidido: o virus é um animal global.

Não fechem os olhos senão não o vão ver. Mas que ele o há, há...
E serão muitos os escolhidos. Só em galinhas já foram 13 milhões.

Em galinhas? Sim, em galinhas mas fora do espaço da UE. Comam-nas à vontade. Não vale a pena preocuparem-se com o TAMIFLU.

Mas, então, o virus, animal global?

O jornal do José Manuel Fernandes, jornal de referência nacional, não para de nos surpreender pela profundidade e justeza das suas análises.

No Editorial do Público de hoje, 15 de Novembro, JMF depois de referir 3 casos do quotidiano de europeus de regiões diferentes e que julgo tomar como representativos dessas mesmas regiões, serve-se do último relatório do Europeu

André Sapir no seu mais recente relatório para os ministros das Finanças da União Europeia sobre o futuro do modelo social europeu

Para mostrar que há

quatro modelos sociais na Europa: o nórdico, o anglo-saxão, o continental e o mediterrânico.

Não sei de que região é o Sr André Sapir mas não me parece ser necessário ir recorrer a um Senhor da Europa (será esta uma região diferente das outras? Uma supra-região? Uma região dotada de homens especiais?) para saber que isto é assim: do Norte para o Sul, as coisas vão sempre a piorar. Talvez os ministros da Finanças não saibam....

JMF promete-nos que vai voltar a estes modelos mas para já deixa-nos com um aviso: O nosso modelo,

o mediterrânico (o nosso e de Roma...), nem é equitativo, nem eficiente. Um e outro são insustentáveis.Daí que tenhamos de mudar de vida (e de modelo, com tudo o que isso implica) ou de mudar de país (imigrando, como sempre fizemos, só que agora as portas abrem-se sobretudo para os melhores de nós, o que é ainda mais trágico para os que cá vão ficando). Se acreditarmos que ainda existimos como nação, o melhor seria mudar de vida

Ou somos bons e nos mudamos para os países do Norte (onde, com algum esforço, podemos incluir o Reino Unido, para podermos usar uma das histórias: a história de uma portuguesa (dos melhores) que se doutorou em Londre e por lá teve que ficar), ou somos bons e ficamos cá porque a tragédia é mediterrânica (é grega) ou não somos bons e, para castigo, ficamos mortos em terras solarentas.
O modelo a desejar é o que nos é dado pelo casal de Nórdicos:
F. ensina numa universidade da Noruega, país que possui um dos mais elevados rendimentos per capita do mundo. O marido não é licenciado e tem um emprego banal, mas também bem pago. Este ano estiveram de férias num país do Sul e, apesar do seu poder de compra, viajavam com mochilas, utilizaram os transportes públicos mas não deixaram de visitar museus ou de percorrer a pé montes e vales que os portugueses mal conhecem.  

Só não percebo porque cá vêm ao Sul. Amor à Antropologia ou à Arqueologia? Não vêm é ver pessoas porque não as reconhecem. O Sampaio terá razão quanto à nossa vocação turística cultural e histórica? E quem terá feito museus, como os de Roma? Ineficazes...E o que interessam os museus aos Ministros das Finanças senão puderem servir a Economia?

Na Pública de Sábado, 13 de Novembro, o da procissão em Lisboa, transmitida em directo pela TV, vem uma entrevista com David Justino, sociólogo, para falar dos subúrbio. Tudo por causa da França, já se vê
Ficamos a saber que,

Existem muitas mais diferenças do que semelhanças entre os subúrbios de Paris e os bairros de realojamento em torno de Lisboa, diz o sociólogo David Justino, que contudo não descarta o que chama de efeito de contágio. O ex-ministro da Educação está convicto que as instâncias de mediação, os conselhos para as minorias éticas, levam sobretudo a que se institua a descriminação.

E também que, embora nos devamos preocupar, a realidade francesa e portuguesa é muito diferente. Diz David Justino,

São realidades muito diferentes. A maior parte dos novos bairros que foram construídos ao abrigo do Programa Especial de Realojamento (PER), de 1993 para cá, têm características completamente diferentes na sua configuração, na sua dimensão e até nas características arquitectónicas. Tirando um caso ou outro na cidade de Lisboa, como Chelas, não existem em Portugal aquelas grandes concentrações. Depois há, sobretudo, a diferença nas pessoas. A origem dos fluxos migratórios para Portugal, a sua composição, são muito diferentes daquilo que se verificou em França. Nos bairros sociais em Portugal não existe um peso significativo de população de religião muçulmana. Uma parte da população realojada é católica, fala português e portanto não tem processos de aculturação muito difíceis. Embora exista, como é natural, uma identificação étnica.

Já suspeitávamos que a violência está no sangue – nos genes ? – dos mulçumanos. Nos católicos não. Mas não sabíamos que jovens nascidos em França não falam francês!!! Por isso não se entendem, nem David Justino sabe o que diz, porque não sabe o que dizem.
Fica ainda por desvendar esse mistério que é a identificação étnica...

Nada como uma conversa franca

Presidente Bush, usando as maravilhas da tecnologia, pode falar com soldados em Tikrit. A televisão fez uma reportagem da teleconferência entre Bush e alguns militares - um deles Iraquiano. Bush quis saber o que se passava no terreno e os militares responderam apropriadamente.

Acontece que tudo foi encenado, de um lado e do outro. A todos foram dadas as 'linhas', ao militares foi dito o que fazer. Como só houve tempo para um ensaio, houve alguns enganos na leitura do guião, mas nada que não pudesse acontecer na realidade. O guião era bastante fraco mas era o suficiente para o público - os americanos, supõe-se. Todos estavam muito optimistas em vésperas e deram os parabéns uns aos outros.

Alguém teve a ideia de filmar os ensaios e as filmagens - digno de um DVD. O script está no site do Departamento da defesa.

A gripe das aves e os militares

Como já foi o caso do SARS, da gripe de Hong Kong, a ‘gripe das aves’, a H5N1,  e uma possível – há quem diga provável- pandemía que mataria milhões de pessoas. A OMS tem, desde 2003, monitorizado os casos de aves infectadas na Tailândia, Vietnam, Japão, Coreia do Sul,  China, Indonésia, etc. e de pessoas afectadas: 32, segundo os dados da Nature de 2004. Em 2005, esse número subiu para 56.
A existência de aves migratórias infectadas faz temer que a doença nas aves se estenda rapidamente. Até agora, os casos conhecidos de pessoas infectadas têm ocorrido por transmissão de aves para humanos mas já há organizações internacionais que temem uma transmissão possível entre pessoas – é neste contexto que a possibilidade da pandemia existiria.

Até agora, temos notícias de países ricos que adquiriram já milhões de vacinas. No entanto, pouco se sabe sobre os planos de prevenção, distribuição de remédios e contenção da doença.

Pode have, vai haver uma pandemia de ‘gripe das aves’ num futuro mais ou menos próximo. É urgente, urgentíssimo estarmos preparados. No entanto, a informação que temos é extremamente escassa e torna-se difícil mobilizar as pessoas de países onde nunca houve um caso de animais ou pessoas infectadas. É neste quadro -  que sinceramente não sei quanto tem de histeria, ciência e interesses da indústria farmanceutica -  e, numa semana extremamente conturbada para os conservadores americanos, que o Presidente Bush escolheu falar na ‘sua preocupação’ com as consequências de tal epidemia e na solução que tem para esta eventualidade.

Depois da militarização de New Orleans, após o furacão Katrina, o Presidente Bush prepara-se para pedir ao Congresso que lhe dê os poderes de Comandante em Chefe para mobilizar a força militar dentro dos Estados Unidos a fim de impôr a quarentena em áreas onde haja ou possa haver aves ou pessoas infectadas.


Durante a conferência de imprensa perguntou:

``If we had an outbreak somewhere in the United States, do we not then quarantine that part of the country? And how do you, then, enforce a quarantine?''

E a resposta foi óbvia:

“...I think the president ought to have all ... assets on the table to be able to deal with something this significant,...''

``One option is the use of a military that's able to plan and move. So that's why I put it on the table. I think it's an important debate for Congress to have.''

Até agora, a Guarda Nacional está sob o comando dos Estados e não do Governo Federal. Por outro lado, desde 1878, que é proíbido às Guardas nacionais fazerem trabalho policial dentro dos Estados Unidos.

O que Bush se propõe é, pois, mudar a lei, para ser não apenas presidente mas Comandante das tropas em território nacional:

``But Congress needs to take a look at circumstances that may need to vest the capacity of the president to move beyond that debate. And one such catastrophe or one such challenge could be an avian flu outbreak,''

Caso o Congresso venha a considerar esta hipótese, ou, pior ainda, a venha a aprovar, as respostas a desastres naturais e outros dentro dos Estados Unidos, passariam a estar sob controlo militar.

Depois do Patriot Act, das patrulhas militares em New Orleans, com recolher obrigatório e tudo o que está implícito num estado de sítio, o controlo militar de zonas do território americano pode acontecer.

Como se chama isto?

Mas afinal eles estão bem!

A mãe de Bush fez parte do grupo de notáveis mobilizados para angariar fundos para ajudar os desalojados provenientes de New Orleans.
Mas, provavelmente, depois de ter visitado o Astrodome no Texas terá pensado que já haveria muita ajuda. Ficou assustada: muita daquela gente queria ir para Houston

"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we're going to move
toHouston."

E acrescentou:

"What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas.
Everyone isso overwhelmed by the hospitality."And so many of the people in the arena here, youknow, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (shechuckles
slightly) is working very well for them."

Hospitalidade, mas sem exagerar, terá pensado. Já nos estão a invadir!

Como não podia deixar de ser, a direita religiosa fundamentalista, por divina inspiração provavelmente, viu na tragédia de New Orleans o castigo de Deus. Fiel aos seus ódios de estimação, culpou o Festival gay que se ia celebrar na cidade (Southern Decadence) pela sua devastação

"Southern Decadence" has a history of filling the French Quarters section of the
city with drunken homosexuals engaging in sex acts in the public streets and
bars. Last year, a local pastor sent video footage of sex acts being performed
in front of police to the mayor, city council, and the media. City officials
simply ignored the footage and continued to welcome and praise the weeklong
celebration as being an "exciting event". However, Hurricane Katrina has put an
end to the annual celebration of sin.

"Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city," stated Repent America director Michael Marcavage. "From 'Girls Gone Wild' to 'Southern Decadence,' New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. From the devastation may a city full of righteousness emerge," he continued.

Para quem se lembra como Rumsfeld recebeu e comentou o saque em Bagdad, depois da "libertação", não pode deixar de achar estranha a reacção de Peggy Noonan, editora do Wall Street Journal, contra a população que não conseguiu sair de New Orleans

As for the tragic piggism that is taking place on the streets of New Orleans, it is not unbelievable but it is unforgivable, and I hope the looters are shot. A hurricane cannot rob a great city of its spirit, but a vicious citizenry can. A bad time with Mother Nature can leave you digging out for a long time, but a bad turn in human behavior frays and tears all the ties that truly bind human being--trust, confidence, mutual regard, belief in the essential goodness of one's fellow citizens.

Foi com cartazes como este que membros de um grupo evangélico - Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas - se apresentaram no funeral de dois soldados mortos no Iraque que ocorreu em Tennesse, no passado sábado. (Reporter – Times)

Deus está a punir os soldados americanos por defenderem um país que acolhe homosexuais é o que dizem.

Não é a primeira vez e, infelizmente, não será a úlima (ver Free Republic).
